L. B. Zinger

The name “Zinger” is a pen name borrowed from the author’s husband’s family name, which itself has a darkly interesting history. The author is retired from her career as a cardiac electrophysiologist and ethicist. She says she has suffered from migraines since age 14, and that her story in issue 927 depicts her struggles with the affliction.

“Migraines and Metamorphosis” is bound to unsettle readers, who will begin by sympathizing with the narrator but, at the end, may wonder whether their next headache will turn them into some kind of monster. Rather, readers should not worry that their heart specialist might be secretly named Victor — or Victoria — Frankenstein but that the metamorphoses described in the story are visual interpretations of unrelievable pain.
