Nkume the Goat” is a story for children of about age 6 or 7. It has a particularly African flavor and is unlike most chlldren’s stories on other continents. It begins charmingly with an account of Nkume’s role as the favorite pet of the Mbuku family. The tale takes a serious turn when Chief Aka seizes Nkume as a kind of collateral for a loan he has extended for Papa Mbuku’s medical treatment. When the family proves to be too poor to repay the loan, Chief Aka mistreats Nkume, but he repents when Nkume impresses upon him the moral that life is more important than money.
