Challenge 977

Analogical Messaging

  1. In Gil Hoy’s At the Zoo: Why does the narrator assume that the elephant trumpeting in the distance is frightened? What might be the source of its disquiet?

  2. In Channie Greenberg’s Owmapow Aims High: When does communication begin to break down between Owen Brownstone and Sally Snark? Is only one of them at fault?

  3. In Mike Acker’s Mystique: Why has the process of evolution not — or not yet — decided that the male gender is completely useless?

  4. In David Santiago’s The Saboteur: Who drinks what and how many alcoholic beverages? Is anyone incapacitated by pure drunkenness rather than being Mickey-Finned?

  5. In David A. Riley’s Lucilla:

    1. How was the girl Lucilla destroyed in part 6? Do the flying monsters from Hell take physical form when attacking a human person possessed by one of their own kind? If so, what conditions must be present for the attack to take place?
    2. At what point in part 6 did the demon pass from Lucilla to Miranda?
    3. At what point in part 11 does the demon pass from Miranda to the little girl in the passing car?
    4. Will the small demon eventually grow up and begin to prey on other demons in its turn? If so, won’t it need to fly away from its host and go back to Hell?
    5. What must humans do to kill off the demon that has been occupying Lucilla, Daisy and Miranda?
