Lemons

by Gary Inbinder

A lemon is a car
that appears all shiny and new.
It looks great on the dealer’s lot,
but what is hidden from the buyer’s view,
is not so hot.

The things
we cannot spot,
are tainted; subpar;
the corrupt inner-workings of an illusory car.

People are lemons, too;
the ones we thought we knew.
But we only saw the surface;
their souls were hidden from view.

If only we could spot,
the secreted deep-seated rot,
before we’re sold a lemon,
and drive it off the lot.
