Mandelbrot

by Mike Acker

What if it is true that
all that is
is as Mandelbrot has found:
that we are in fact
in a fractal world,
ever infinite, ever repeating;
the pleasures and the pains
are simply outlines
of the shapes that grow
and grow, then shrink
and fade as bigger worlds
swallow it whole.

As they are shrunk
and swallowed, too,
angst becomes the fluid march
in time to a beat that’s set
to speeds unknown,
and so we hold our breath
for those allotted moments
when we are large still and aware
before the grip takes us under
to disappear
never to see or be seen again.
