Lester L. Weil

Lester has retired to Arizona and lives near the border with Mexico. In previous careers, he has been a professional bassoonist, professor, furniture and house builder, and magazine editor.

The Guardian Angel and the Predator” is a story that will entertain readers of a skeptical bent. A somewhat reclusive gentleman suddenly meets a stranger on his property. The stranger claims to be a guardian angel.

Now, the property owner is not inclined to believe in angels, and a discussion about them arises when the stranger, who doesn’t fit any angel stereotype, doesn’t immediately do any obvious guardian-angeling. However, when a Predator drone suddenly flies into sight overhead, the visitor’s hocus-pocus waving appears to steer the crash-bound vehicle safely away from the two men.

Lots of questions arise, particularly: How can one test for guardian-angelhood? Did the visitor’s “magic” work, or did the drone veer away for another reason? And how did the visitor know the drone was coming? Or did he? It would seem that running any “test case” to verify the visitor’s identity would involve letting one’s guard down.
