Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...

Kelly Kurtzhals Geiger

Kelly’s careers describe a somewhat spectacular trajectory, beginning with tomatoes and beans on a farm in southeastern Michigan and ending not very far away, in Ohio, with the curent occupation of pursuing an MFA degree in fiction writing at Bowling Green University.

After liftoff, so to speak, Kelly earned a BFA degree in Acting from New York University, which led to a professional career in stand-up comedy. Kelly’s name and photo still appear in the Hollywood Comedy Store. Kelly moved to writing and producing for television and won six Daytime Emmy nominations. Lately, Kelly has moved from Los Angeles to Ohio. In the meantime, she has published short stories extensively in literary journals. Our readers may have seen Kelly’s byline, screen credits or Kelly herself at some point.

Tip of the World” tells the story of Maude, who reaches middle age, leaves her work in a climate overheated by global warming and sets out for one of the few remaining cold places in the world, at the top of North America. Maude is both fleeing and seeking a lover who has, himself, turned cold and left her feeling as barren as the snowscape of Nunavut. Since Maude comes to terms with the person she has been and is becoming. she chooses a new name for herself: “Mariah.”

Readers may be reminded of an old popular song, where Mariah is the name of the wind. And they will surely be fascinated by the emotions and recollections of a woman who has reached a stage where she must make an important change in her life.
