Captive to the Hawk

by Oonah V. Joslin

I saw the kill. Identified. A blue tit.
Sat still. Unwillingly. A captive also.
Watched it feathered. Pick-picked at. A bloodied feast.
Forty minutes. Bird to bone. The hawk flew on.
That was yesterday. No sign today. No birds.
On my rockery. Nor predator. Nor prey.
