Leo, at the Beach

by James Tweedie

Relentless are the waves that wash upon
The dune-swept shore. Their muffled, ceaseless roar
A siren song that summons forth the dawn
And lulls to sleep the night that came before.

The ebb and rise of tide respires the day
As seagulls hitchhike on the offshore breeze
And dart for fish beneath the breaking spray
At peace amidst perpetual unease.

The steadfast land collides with restless seas
As shell and stone are hammered into sand
That static-clings onto my feet and knees.
I take my grandson, Leo, by the hand

And, as he trots along to match my stride,
A surf-song shadow follows at our side.
