P. Fern Phillips

Bewildering Stories biography

P. Fern Phillips was given a practical background growing up; rather than being raised by an artistic family, she was raised by ranchers and married a Physics major and pursued a career in information and document management. It was only much later in life that her artistic skills were allowed to develop.

Fern has been writing all her life. She belonged to the Internet Writer’s Group for practice lists and poetry lists for five years, and she ran a local writers’ group. She successfully did NaNoWriMo (Write a Novel in the Month of November) three times.

Fern has self published an e-book textbook with Smashwords. She has two image-journal books ready to self-publish, the first now available at Blurb Books Canada. She published two recent memoir pieces in the Calgary Association of Lifelong Learners newsletter (October 2022 and January 2023).

“The God of Chickens” was inspired when I read about Maximon, a rather unsavoury god who chain-smokes cigarettes, and also by the Bible story in Mark 12:1-12, where the man who owns a vineyard eventually gives it away because of betrayal by its overseers.
