Peter D. McQuade

Peter McQuade has enjoyed a 40-year career in aeronautical and space systems engineering. He lives in Colorado Springs, where he is active in writers’ associations. He publishes novels and short stories.

The Flight of the Golden Plover” tells a story of early aviation. A new model plane, the Golden Plover, takes to the air in 1923 to set a cross-country distance record in the U.S. by following the Mississippi River from north to south and back again. But there’s a lot more to the story than merely flying a plane.

The story is told from the viewpoint of a foreman in the shop where the Plover has been built. He waits anxiously for word about the plane’s progress in stormy weather. Meanwhile, he gives the readers succinct insights into the history of flight in the 1920’s. We learn who built the plane, what went into its construction, and what a successful flight will mean to the pilot and the aviation technicians and entrepreneurs.
