Art of the Storm

by Oonah V. Joslin

Against the olympian sky of the great storm
interlaced rings bright
winking
eye to the weather
we watched kittiwakes nest
a narrow ledge on the Baltic Mill
lulled by the natural music of the flow
relayed upwards
amplified

From the Sage green
contoured clouds cascaded
rocked to the crack
burst new bolts to the Tyne Bridge
with fiery finger
relayed downwards
amplified

Walls and walls endless
constant grey and horizontal
rain hid the city all from view
roads gushed rivers
no through traffic
relayed chaos
amplified

And had we seen that mushrooming
of cloud that settled on the city
from above
witnessed that extreme
fear might have stormed our hearts
amplified

I feared for the kittiwakes
