Moonings

by Bruce Ducker

I’ve tired of the tedium: same patterns, same moves,
Night in night out, the deepening grooves
Of an ancient orbit. If human I’d seem deranged,
Same ellipse, same shadows, no change.

Quarter-full, quarter-new, a cosmic maze
All the while searching for one phase,
Rained upon by errant asteroids
That pock my surface, cosmic hemorrhoids.

I’m either green cheese or a promise too far,
Arrant thief, or the cow’s high bar.
Scrutinized each night through amateur lenses,
Namesake for asylums and bothersome menses.

Tranquility, my ass. I pull at the oceans
While lacking a voice, the tang of emotions.
Please, exempt me from your introspection,
Buy a mirror if you crave reflection.

Spare me the sonnets and jejune romances,
Coupling with June and nude Druid dances
The fatuous rhymes, the ceaseless banality;
They’ve given me a case of tin-pan-ality.

When I finally get company — Cyrano aside —
I’m treated like a landfill or Coney at low tide.
“A step for man, a leap for mankind.”
What crap! And what crap they leave behind:

Exhaust pipes, candy wrappers, Heavens, a golf ball!
Yet never a child, let alone a waterfall.
It’s too much to bear, too much by half.
Who cares what made the little dog laugh?

They criticize my down time, a brief chance to hide;
Even humans indulge an occasional dark side.
Enough. Forgive me. I’m done complaining.
Time to crescent and begin my waning.
