The Memory Market” will surely impress readers as an ingenious adaptation of a societal commonplace: the used-car lot. If one can trade in one’s old car for another that is less used, why not trade in an old, tired memory for something fancier?

Of course, there’s the inevitable catch: what if the purchased car has an unsuspected mechanical flaw? What if the new memory turns out to be less real than the buyer expects?
