“The Ditto Effect” will surely cause readers to note that Harvey Winchester, a retired police officer, is — at least initially — rather plain in comparison to other characters in the story. His daughter, Cecilia, is much more authoritative, and she strongly objects to his continuing to call her by her childhood nickname, “Sissy.” But stick with the story: Harvey duplicates his allowing “Sissy” to become “Cecilia” by accidentally giving himself a pen name when Cecilia insists he attend a writers’ conference. That “ditto effect” marks the point when Harvey begins to exhibit a personality.
