When Time Says No

by John Eric Ellison

I stood where voices fell apart
Wind chilled and froze me in place
You stepped out from the open dark
And the black closed in and held its shape

You never forced me to bow down
You never pushed me to the floor
You sealed the split across my skin
And showed the night my shape

The ground beneath me fell away
No hand reached out to hold me up
I tripped past stone and empty air
And nothing called for me to stop

Nothing breaks here
Nothing lets go
I learned what remains
When time says no

I am still here
I am still here

I stepped across the bodies laid
Boots pressed ash into the ground
My hands came back without a mark
Their blood stayed where it fell and dried

Nothing breaks here
Nothing lets go
I learned what remains
When time says no

I am still here
I am still here

I turned and left the street behind
No sound followed where I went
Doors stayed open when I passed
The dead did not guess where I was bound
