Bewildering Stories

The Devil in Montmartre
at the San Diego Museum of Art

by Gary Inbinder

I just learned that The Devil in Montmartre will be featured at the San Diego Museum of Art’s Art of Reading Book Club, Saturday May 9. The event is being promoted online and on KPBS, San Diego public radio and related social media. The book is also on sale in the museum’s bookstore. The following is taken from the KPBS announcement:

Join fellow Museum Members as we discuss The Devil in Montmartre: a Mystery in Fin de Siècle Paris by Gary Inbinder. A murder shocks Montmartre, and Paris fears Jack the Ripper has arrived. Amid the glitter of the 1889 World’s Fair, Inspector Achille Lefebvre races to catch the “Paris Ripper,” with Toulouse-Lautrec considered one of his suspects.

Coffee and light snacks will be served. The book club will be followed by a docent-led tour of art works relating to the book.

This appears to be a tie-in to a current exhibition, the Art Alive fundraiser, that includes their Toulouse-Lautrec collection. Here’s more info from the Museum’s website:

Art Alive is The San Diego Museum of Art’s signature annual fundraiser, providing vital support for the Museum’s exhibitions, education, outreach, and public programs. This year, Art Alive is a highlight of the Museum’s Centennial celebration, transforming the galleries into an unforgettable, immersive spectacle of flowers and art!

The 2026 event draws inspiration from the Museum’s Centennial exhibition featuring its renowned collection of works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Art Alive will be infused with the vibrant, theatrical spirit of late 19th-century Paris, brought to life through Toulouse-Lautrec’s distinctive artistic lens.

I think it’s kinda cool that the Museum chose my book for this event!
