Paper Weighted

by Sultana Raza

Of sentient material was papyrus made,
Before the philosophers when it was laid.

Then thick parchment put it in the shade,
Before sheets started ruling the publishing arcade

Did silicon byte the paper trade?
For poor eyes aren’t screens a downgrade?

With pixels leading a daring raid,
How soon before pages wither and fade?

But if progress were to retrograde:
Of natural disasters a cavalcade

Were to occur, or if electricity failed,
Though millions would be quite dismayed.

Then paper would get an upgrade,
As paper would prevail for many decades.

But since very slowly they get frayed,
Will win time’s race, carved stones staid.
