Green Auroras

by Richard Ong

The green-coloured aurora as seen in the sky above Aurora Village in Yellowknife, was the result of the light energy released when charged particles from the Sun's solar wind collided with the oxygen atoms in the Earth's atmosphere. This photo was take in early March using a Canon PowerShot SX40 HS mounted on a tripod (F-stop = 2.7; Exposure = 15 sec; ISO 100).

The temperature was −54 C. It was just after midnight. The snow dogs would always howl in unison just before the appearance of the Aurora Borealis as if they could sense the spirits dancing in the sky above. Therefore, we all waited patiently in our heated tents for the eerie cries to start before rushing out into the cold with our cameras.
