By a route obscure and lonely
Haunted by ill angels only...
— E. A. Poe
I’ve enjoyed my time in Dreamland
It’s been lots of fun
So much to do and see
Mom and Dad, the old hometown
Friends long gone
They’re all still here
No one’s aged
We’re all still young
Familiar and yet strange.
All around, the rolling hills
The forest deep and green
And on the beach, one by one
The giant waves crash on the white sand shore
Each one more beautiful and awesome than before.
I often lose my shoes
Sometimes I’m naked, everyone
Has clothes but me, I’ve lost my way
And can’t get home
I have no ticket, have no funds
I’m going round
In circles in a maze
Enveloped in a haze.
An uninvited stranger
Clambers through an open window
Looming closer, threatening
He’s after me, I take a swing
My arm is heavy slow and weak
The stranger’s near but out of reach
Somewhere, anywhere, I try
To hide, no use, he knows and sees
I try to run, my legs are wooden
Try to scream but nothing comes...
But wait, what happened to the fun?
I took a left turn somewhere there
Time to wake up, take a pee,
Check the fridge, crawl back in bed
fluff the pillow, rest my head
Big yawn, roll over, count some sheep
And slowly drift off back to sleep.
