At last count, Michael Schaper has racked up seven professional occupations in Australia, including — admittedly at a stretch — crayfish wrangling. Michael says that flash fiction is his “guilty pleasure.” Welcome to the club, Michael! You’re quite at home at Bewildering Stories, because we don’t feel guilty about it.

“Out for the Evening” passes initially for a comical Halloween story, where a scarecrow goes out posing as a real person. But the conclusion is not conventional; it’s disturbingly appropriate for 2025.
