Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...

Saurav Ranjan Datta

Saurav says he is quite attached to the city of Kolkata, India. He has an advanced degree in business management and works as an author, columnist and content researcher. He has published voluminously in newspapers, magazines and historical and literary journals. His publications also include “a few books.”

The Spectre’s Recompense” is a mystery story that will intrigue readers for the same reasons it puzzles its main character, Neel. A middle manager in a city’s firm, Neel regularly commutes to and from work by way of a streetcar that he catches every workday evening at 5:40 p.m.

Another regular commuter is a woman who fascinates Neel and who, he realizes, has noticed him. But he cannot bring himself to address her without appearing creepy. Suddenly, she disappears unaccountably. And then she reappears twice in unusual places and is associated with unusual events. Neel discovers that a sense of familial obligation — unexpected though it is — can transcend time and space.
