Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...

Olaf Kroneman

Olaf is a native of Detroit, where he has been practicing medicine since 1983. His short fiction has won famous prizes, and a novel, “Detroit Heroic,” is due to be published.

A Show of Hands” will be all the more startling to readers because it comes from a physician. The grand jury’s operations seem unusual, and the number of people whose limbs are crippled suggests an epidemic. But the implied moral of the story justifies the exaggerations: it is a crime when doctors deliberately protect professional incompetence in medical care. The consequences may appear to be extreme, but they are logical.
