Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...

Richard Simonds

Richard has had a varied career as a lawyer, the co-founder of Harbor Mountain Press, and now as an imaginative poet and writer of short stories, particularly in the genre of horror fiction.

Eve and the Well” is a story based on a very latter-day interpretation of the wording of a passage in the book of Genesis, chapter 3. God discovers that Adam and Eve have disobeyed him and eaten of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. The Creator banishes “the man” from Eden. But — wait! — what about Eve? Can she choose to remain in Eden and, perhaps, nibble at the fruit of the Tree of Life? What happens then?

We know well the answer that history provides. Until the 20th century, Eve — and women generally — had no choice. They went where “the man” went. Today, the scribes of Genesis would have to add a cautionary footnote; perhaps they would say: “And Eve, too, of course.”
