“Whale Fall” will disconcert readers who claim to recognize in “Whale Fall” a description of humpback whales as they live in the oceans of planet Earth. But that’s the starting point. “Whale Fall” is lyrical speculative fiction that depicts a similar kind of whale as interstellar entities swimming the space between the stars and nebulae of the Milky Way. The premise is that both Earth and space can share a similar experience of beauty. One little doubt may remain, of course: communication in space. In the realm of spacetime, messages can travel no faster than the speed of light, and that takes time.
