Quarterbacky

by Lewayne L. White

Source: Lewis Carroll, “Jabberwocky

for Aislyn

’Tis thrilling when the lively droves
Do tire of piddling ’way the day
With flimsy little plastic stoves
And silly housewife play.

“Beware the Stepford wife, my girl!
Her baking bread and coffee klatsch
Beware the Barbie doll, and twirl
Past the ballet Saut de chat!”

She forsook her princess dresses,
An independent life she sought.
No rest as she pursued her degree,
And focused all her thought.

And as she reached the end of term,
The Quarterback, with dreams of fame
Lumbered up, the arrogant worm,
Bellowing as it came.

“Hey there, girl. Give me a whirl?”
Her silver tongue went snicker-snack!
She left him flat, that puffed-up prat,
And to her work went back.

“And hast thou crushed the Quarterback?
Come to my arms, my clever girl!
Oh joyous day! Hip! Hip! Hooray!”
He spun her in a twirl.

’Tis thrilling when the lively droves
Do tire of piddling ’way the day
With flimsy little plastic stoves
And silly housewife play.
