Challenge 912

Over Eating

  1. In Rebecca Johnson’s The Well-Check:

    1. What does the blood on Darren’s face indicate?
    2. To what extent do the first six chapters of Keepers of the Ageless One seem to parody the reality TV survivalist program Alone? To what extent do they differ?
  2. In Laura Cody’s Ridding the World of Vice:

    1. The apparition says he’s not an angel, but he doesn’t admit to being a demon, either. What is he?
    2. Does the apparition appear to conclude that Mr. Viceroy is a psychopath?
    3. How many wives, mistresses and girlfriends has Mr. Viceroy had? Does it seem likely that he has acted out his chronic anger in every situation? How could anyone have put up with him to begin with? What kind of personality might he have had earlier?
    4. In C. S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters, the Devil is quoted as not worrying about a rich man’s philanthropic impulse because, he says, “I'll organize it.” How is the Devil’s strategy illustrated by Vice’s concept of kindness?
  3. In Jeffrey Greene’s The Locust Inspector: Is the protein in everyone’s diet derived exclusively from locusts? How might entrepreneurs benefit from a public desire for variety?

  4. In Mitchell Near’s Annika’s Dream:

    1. Is the dream really Annika’s or is it Sasha’s?
    2. Apply the premise universally: if every life form is reincarnated, what are the chances you’ll have as good or better a life the next time around than the one you’ve already had?
  5. In Charles C. Cole’s The Violence Around and in Us: Do the two boys’ family trees make you wonder about ancestors of your own and whether some quirks might be inheritable?
