Challenge 86

Thomas R., “Union”

Tom shares with us a premise for a story. The Challenge is in classic mode: write a beginning, middle or ending. Or any combination; or all three, if you like.

Her father let her see the images from the signal. It came from a planet called U-347. It showed images of a people healthy, joyful, prosperous, and harmonious. Unlike her world, there was no crime or poverty. They had moved beyond money or illness. They could even synthesize anything at the molecular level with little cost. They only wished the betterment of themselves and others.

They showed the king our world would be as theirs if we joined Union, an organization to which they belonged. In just a few decades they had gone from being as primitive as we to this seeming paradise.

It all sounded great, but somehow the way they used pronouns struck her as peculiar. Perhaps Papa could explain this to her when they knew more about this world.

“I am U-348 and I bring you a message of hope. The following signals shall tell you of the wonders of Union. So let me lead you to a utopian future. I know that once you hear the way you won’t be able to resist our offer.”

So let’s see now... We can write:
  1. a beginning.
  2. a beginning and a middle.
  3. a beginning, a middle and an ending.
  1. a middle.
  2. a middle and an ending.
  3. an ending.

Multiple combinations (Nos. 2, 3 and 5) may form a coherent story, or they may stand separately. Take your pick, have fun, and please share it with us!

Please send us your ideas!
