The Dark Woods

by Yuliia Vereta

There stands the tree in the deep woods
With gilded chain and green shoots.
There walks a cat along that chain.
Who looks at him becomes insane.

That cat is rare, one of a kind,
With smart thoughts and a big smile.
He tells the tales, sings the songs
In those deep woods that hide the bones

Of many heroes and brave knights,
Who came to fight, but only died
Among the trees that keep the beasts,
Who eat nightmares during feasts.

This forest is a magic place,
If you don’t know it – it’s the maze.
For some of us it’s safe and nice,
If you are daring – roll the dice,

Take a few steps on those roads,
Where the pixies hunt the fowls,
Where the dragons lay the eggs,
Where Bigfoot has massive legs.

There the centaurs measure time,
The goblins hide the pots with dimes,
There the werewolves howl at night
When the moon is shining bright.

There the song is heard from sirens,
Who’ll never let you walk in silence.
There the dwarves will bring you to
The cave with ogre spooking you.

There the ghosts and the spirits
Will scare you and golden phoenix
Will lead you to the huge deep lake,
Where Basilisk, the scaled snake,

Will look straight into your eyes,
Without blinking; and you’ll die
If you don’t close them standing there,
While the monstrous snake will stare.

Close to the lake lives the chimera,
Admiring her three heads in mirror,
Seeing reflection in the water,
Which is a home for tailed sea daughters.

The mermaids will give you a call
To come much closer and then fall
In those deep waters. If you let
The mermaids charm you, you’ll be dead.

The shores of that deep lake in woods
Have ancient trees with mighty roots,
Which discuss destinies and fates
Of those ones who weren’t saved.

Of those who stayed in the dark place
With Bogeyman with dreadful face,
With Minotaur guarding the maze,
With subtle nymphs dancing with grace.

There lives Briareus with his swords
The elves shoot arrows at the birds
Unseen before and never known,
Like all those creatures that are shown

By those dark woods to only those
Who’re brave enough to bring their souls
To see the strange and the unknown,
To meet their death suppressing howl.

If you are one of those who dare,
Then go ahead and get sword bared,
Follow that shining leading deep
Into dark woods that never sleep.
