Sea of Tranquility

by Oonah V. Joslin

I always show you my best face,
the calm face,
the shiny face,
my phase.
It doesn’t reflect who I am.

We've danced through space
time from our first kiss.
Locked in this temporary embrace.
I feel your pull
as you feel mine.

I’ve felt every impact,
as you do;
natural, artificial,
shallow and deep.
Your seismographs will have told you as much.

In many ways we are alike:
surface heterogeneous regions,
elastic scattering,
inelastic absorption,
of a magnitude maybe greater than yours.

But you know I’m brittle.
My mantle is cracked, flawed.
These quakes are caused
by the failure of deep faults.
Tranquility is an illusion.
