Near Future — Same Show

by Robin Helweg-Larsen

Give them a jack in the back of the neck.
No blood, mess or pain —
Into the spinal cord, into the brain,
Broadcasting The Show in their own TV slot,
24/7, want it or not.
Instead of laugh tracks, just hit their button.
Forget violins, when it’s meant to be sad — hit their button.
Wake them to send them to work — hit their button.
Make them addicted to work — hit their button.
Doing what?
Mining, recycling,
Installing, maintaining,
Building, repairing,
Farming, processing, waiting and serving,
Carrying, guarding,
Teaching and caring for
Us.
We give their lives meaning, they work, watch The Show,
And they send us our cut as they come and go,
Buying our stuff.
We give them The Show, that’s enough,
Through that jack in the back of the neck.

“I laughed till I cried—”
“They came from behind—”
“They won all kinds of money—”
“Wasn’t meant to be funny—”
“So sad when she died—”
“Did you know he was blind?—”
“Now let’s all get to work, now we know
“We all watched The Same Show.”
