Picky About Prey

by Channie Greenberg

Yonder dude’s picky about prey.
Puppy dog tails and cat entrails
Don’t always decide his menu.

Sangomas abhor his gender,
Equanamity, use of jib sticks,
Headdress’ annealed beads.
All’s acrimony plus jealousy.

Their spleen-filled sentiments
Cause those “healers” to slip
Amongst grykes, discharging
More than viscera to fissions.
Often, entire generations fly.

Human clints, hardwood chants,
Equally, clan-based fulminations,
Otherwise, rouse corrupt ghosts,
Disturb dead best ditched below
With slugs and worms, to drink
Former kingdoms’ limited rain.

Mere macabre divinations route
Sibyls’ vindictive invocations.
(Competition takes two to tug.)
When elders spurn antagonisms,
Rarely simply spice or crawlers
Capably restore neglected spirits.
There’s odd clout in necromancy.
