I Did Not Take a Vow of Silence

by Shola Balogun

The thrilling tricks
of tripling tongues

We ask for bread
they give us stones

The telling theme
tickling the trance
of the teeming thieves

I speak now
in anointed tongues!

My poetry is the depth
of the Nile!

If not anger, what then
sharpens my tongue?

I will have my words
become fists

Words become fists
where silence alone
cannot break through
the wall of lies

I did not take a vow
of silence

My words and my fists
are one
