Diamonds Fall

a villanelle

by Diana Anderson

On Saturn, diamonds fall instead of rain.
This giant planetary ball of gas
circles in its starry, dark terrain

with jagged rings of stony ice, a reign
majestical in its tan and stripèd brass.
On Saturn, diamonds fall instead of rain.

And Galileo saw with awe sustained
the helium and hydrogen canvas
that circles in its starry, dark terrain

before another soul saw that space contained
this spherical gravitational mass.
On Saturn, diamonds fall instead of rain.

A planet marvelous does entertain
the stargazers’ scopes on night-time grass
that circles in its starry, dark terrain.

Space includes in its eminent domain
dark and spinning crownal glass.
On Saturn, diamonds fall instead of rain,
While it circles in its starry, dark terrain.
