A Wife Named White

by Alyssa D. Ross

Charming had a craving,
a demand for shiny, sweet apples,
inside a pie,
like his own mother’s design.

His new wife, Eira White,
bought them, choosing carefully
to appease him. Organic, locally grown,
the meat the color of bone.

She slices through the skin
to get to the sweet center, then
chops it up to bits
to feed to Hubby Horse-bit.

Sautéed in a skillet with cinnamon and cardamom,
and other exotic herbs, but not bitter, life-giving rampion.
A sweetly sinister dessert, presented on a plattered mirror,
dressed with spiced caramel,
filled with sins she’d never tell.
