Fritz Lieber was Right

by Lou Antonelli

“That’s the eighth fire alarm coming in from a church!” The Shift Captain was frantic now. Blinking red lights were scattered across the screen.

“Every church in the city is on fire at the same time, sir,” said the emergency services console operator, without looking up.

The Captain put his hands on the back of her chair. “Jeannette, what the hell is going on?”

The young lady spun around in her chair and looked hatefully at him. He saw she wore a small pentagram around her neck. She shot him point blank in the groin with a very large gun she had been resting in her lap. He toppled backwards with a very surprised look. “The biggest damn conspiracy you never heard of... sir.”
