A Snake Awakes

by Oonah V. Joslin

The stirring of it
in the dank cold earth
how warm flesh wakes
muscle writhes tongue flicks to taste
test the temperature to feel
grass bask on sunny banks
now to twist and turn out
onto the midday slab lie still
still as turd or turf on this sheep-cropped outcrop
dark diamond in the rough
spring of patterned potential
its heart beats
imbibes heat
insinuates
there is more to life
up in the disco realms of sunlight
sex to be had
rock and rollup there
danger and duels
more engaging than this
deep hallowed hibernation bowl
a resurrection of sorts
imperative
to bite at heels of lamb and vole
reproduce
seek out the egg.
The embryo is
all.
