Feathers

by Julie Wornan

in the fierce winter wind
a flock of souls flew by
heading toward the sea

but when the wind slackened
they fell

like feathers

one lighted on a leaf bud
one melted in a pond

one fell into the dark cold earth
and down and down

the rock will hold it dear
a million winters long
until the sun forgets
and forgets to forget again
