Talking to Myself

I’m going to stop
talking to myself
in the way I do;
saying I’m useless
as compared to you
or any other.
I’m going to drop
the mask of failure
I use to excuse
the cowardice hidden
in warm recesses
of fear. I’m going
to embrace the year
with optimism
not least because I
can’t go on this way
thinking I’m best then
thinking I’m worst and
losing either way
caught between the horns
of arrogance and
low self-esteem. I’ll
try to be gentle
with each new morning
do what I must do
and allow life to
unwrap its gift and
forgive each sunset.
