Meteor

by Hongping Liu

Tell me, meteor
why your life
is so fleeting.

Your bright wings
ignite the dark sky,
astonishing countless beings,
then disappearing without trace.

Like electricity
you shed bizarre sparkles,
space couriers
proclaiming your meaning.

Why don’t you tarry a while
to consort with the moon?
Have you a secret destination
known only to you?

Or do you come from nowhere
en route to nowhere,
your flame both your birth
and your death?
