Cold Searing Strings

by Mike McGonegal

A snowy steak alone again a
Background laugh I heard before
It hits the pan they meant to muff
They tried I’m hungry not that much

My absent party mocks away
As meat replaces company
So dark the wine allows her death
More glasses leave her with the rest

The sirloin flips I hear their songs
Away too far I scrub a fork
She left I rinse a plate so hard the
Water spraying shirt she’s gone

Cold searing strings but brown outside
A dinner quiet screaming loss
I lost this beef is twisted right
The blood-soaked flesh my love tonight
