Angry Hippos

by Anna Ruiz

He’s still angry with Tolstoy for
throwing Anna under the train.
Me, I feel like a train wreck
in someone’s story, perhaps
my own.
They say hippos —
even if they are an aggressive breed —
don’t carry grudges
across the river when they feed.

One’s breeding means nothing;
it’s all stranger than fiction,
truer than the man in the moon,
blind with destiny.
