Girl With a Rusty Wagon

by Marina J. Neary

Rinnie was born with a rusty wagon
Attached to her tailbone.
As she grew older, so did the wagon,
Slowly filling up with candy wrappers,
Chewed up gum, broken pencils,
Bottle corks, cigarette butts,
Dirty needles, knocked-out teeth.

When she drowned in a cold tub
At age thirty-four and went to heaven,
St. Peter saw the rusty wagon
Rattling behind her, and shook his head.
“No baggage allowed, dear sister.”
