Shadow Art

by Mary Brunini McArdle

Shadow me a tree branch,
Bending in the wind,
Bring it into contrast
With a startling blue sky;
Shadow it a winter tree,
Gnarled and bare and gray,
Its dry leaves mustered on the ground.

Shade them, blend them,
Color them dead.
Shadow them into the landscape,
Touch them with patches of snow,
Bequeath them to the barren season,
Until it’s spring again.
