I Confess

by Anna Ruiz

I confess
and now I have nothing
more to say,
the torture of my soul
is nearly complete

I am finished
in the way a self-portrait
will always pool at bound feet

Lonely footprints in the sand
are washed away
like sins in a confessional,
the remains of this day
lie dormant in the moon,
the barn owl has caught a blindfolded mouse,
the shepherd knows the
wolf in sheep’s clothing sleeps under
a blossoming plum tree
and love still walks in and out
of the doors to my soul,
takes me to every
ecstasy
higher and higher

Tears of release fall like
rain inside my heart,
thin and greedy vultures circle
once again,
remnants of me
linger
like a poem
