All I can say is “Wow! What great feedback. I appreciate your insights. As to Gilboy’s precipitous departure, the critique is well taken and I’m obliged.

Don, you are likely already aware of the textual modification. I believe that Jerry passed that on to you last evening.

For the rest of those emotionally disturbed about the wife’s absence — and rightly so — I’ve given Mr. G. some reflective observations, which he makes to Sutro on the occasion of their conversation at Whiskey Newtons. He has given his departure a lot of thought, even as he did regarding his supplies, and has concluded that he would rather have his wife wonder than to worry.

His child — just an infant — is not yet acquainted with him, and so will not miss him.

The point was well taken, and I am indebted to you all for your thoughts. As to the philosophical foreword, despite the mixed feelings, I like it, though I’m not ironclad. So bear with me in that.

Thanks,

Sam

Very interesting clarifications, Sam. As of this writing I have not yet received the amended chapter 1, but I’ll be glad to post it when I do. I’m sure the result will make Bernard Gilboy even more human and accessible. We’re all looking forward to his continued adventures as a kind of modern-day Robinson Crusoe on sea rather than on land.
