Normal Service

by Doug Pugh

A train crash in your life
Through your heart and soul
Trauma it cuts and rips
Through loss of what was
In so many different ways
And tomorrow is never yesterday
Except with a hole
But normal service will be resumed as soon as possible
And it is, outwardly
Time the great healer is not
We adapt, we learn to steer life’s seas
With a kink in our rudder
Sailing true in reality
But a little more to port
At the wheel
But normal service will be resumed as soon as possible
The scars and the bruises they stay to ache and chafe
Another day, another kink, another adjustment
And still we sail onwards
And smile at the storm, sigh with the breeze
Looking always for the ying to its yang
Learning to love the scars
For the tracks of life that they are
Memories of yesterday’s glories
Foundation of what tomorrow may bring
Normal service never stopped
We just thought it did
Daydreaming at the wheel
To the scream of the gulls and the spray of the salt
That is life
