The Review of Jane Jacobs’ Dark Age Ahead

Please pass on to Don Webb my thanks for his excellent review of Dark Age Ahead. I discovered Jane Jacobs in 1966 and lost track of her till last year. Having heard nothing of her since, I became curious and started looking around. I was delighted to discover the depth and breadth of what she has taken on, and how she leaves the usual socio-economic nostrums in the dust. Which also explains why they love to put her down as an amateur.

Another reviewer wrote about The Nature of Economies (200 pages). “This book should carry the message on the cover “Warning: This is an 800 page book.” Don’s review shows why a similar warning on this book would also be appropriate, or “Warning. Only read this book if you are willing to let go of cherished beliefs and do what’s necessary to contribute to human survival, and even well-being.” Only someone who is could write a review like Don’s.

Not only did he give a good insight into the significance of the work, but also a great overview of the main ideas and content of the book. I wish I could do similar work.

Thanks again Don.

Thank you very much for the kind words, Richard.

Jane Jacobs is alive and well and living in Toronto, although she’s reportedly a bit frail as she approaches age 90. She has been interviewed several times on CBC radio; perhaps recordings or transcripts can be found there.
