Robert Payette was born in the town of Cornwall, Ontario. He studied Instrumentation at St Lawrence College before moving to Ottawa where he studied psychology and sociology at the U of O. He helped put together a magazine called Chess Then and Now which, in the words of its creator, takes a “light-hearted, humorous, and hopefully informative look into the world of chess.”

Over the past eleven years he has worked sporadically on a book written in the spirit of Daniel C. Dennett’s Consciousness Explained only with time as the subject of demystification. It is tentatively called The Ghost in the Time Machine. He says he will finish it or die trying before the end of winter 2005.
