Mr. Basanta Kumar Kar
Mr. Basanta Kumar Kar (b.1961) hails from Kendrapara, Orissa, India. A lawyer with a postgraduate degree in rural management, Mr. Kar has more than 25 years of experience in the social development sector, working to better understand and bring a lasting change to poverty and vulnerability in India and abroad.A student of English literature, Law and Rural Management from IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand), Mr. Kar has a passion for poetry since his childhood.

Mr. Basanta Kumar Kar is currently Operations Director for CARE, India, an international development organisation and overseeing programs in Indian states. He has expertise in advocacy, gender, rights based programming, livelihood security, nutrition and disaster management, and has published a wide range of articles on development and management. Mr. Kar’s vision is well recognized by the Government and civil society. He has reputation of working in respected social development organisations like NDDB, Actionaid and Care and has substantial experience of understanding poverty and marginalisation in India and abroad.

His first collection of poems, The Naïve Bird and the second collection of poems The Silent Monsoon have been published by Books India International, New Delhi (a unit of National Publishing House) and Writers Workshop, Calcutta respectively. The third collection of poems, The Unfold Pinnacle, is written on real life stories of most vulnerable women. Perhaps first of its kind, this collection of poems tells of the vulnerability of women who could be abandoned, starved, HIV positive, victims to rape and conflict, malnourished, etc. This collection has poems from various Indian states.
